What is Cocktails for Cancer?
In just two years, Cocktails for Cancer has firmly established itself as the leading ladies event on the North West Coast of Tasmania. Held annually on the first Friday in August, Cocktails for Cancer has enjoyed success from the outset, and continues to grow in popularity. Cocktails for Cancer was first held in 2014 at the Waterfront Function Centre in Devonport. The event was organised by a small committee of friends who saw a gap in the financial assistance available for families who are going through cancer treatment. Too often, household incomes are put on hold or lost completely while someone in the household receives treatment for cancer. This puts financial strain on the family at a time when money is the last thing that they should have to worry about. Our small group decided to organise a cocktail party to raise some money to help families on the North West Coast.
Our very first cocktail party raised in excess of $17,000, far exceeding our expectations. The following year we held the cocktail party at Pier01 in Ulverstone to allow for more guests. Five hundred tickets were released and sold out within two weeks of going on sale. Last year's event subsequently raised over $32,000.
What happens to the money raised?
When planning the inaugural event, we realised that as a committee we wanted to maintain control over the funds we raised, and ensure that they stayed within the local community.
Cancer Fighting Fund NW Tasmania Inc was established in 2014 as a charitable organisation, and we now provide funds to families on the North West Coast undergoing treatment for cancer. Funds of up to $1000 per year, per family, are distributed in the form of grocery or fuel vouchers, or through payment of a household bill, such as rates, power or car registration.
